What each method can and can’t tell you

• Code scan: which circuit reported a fault. Can’t tell whether the cause is electrical, hydraulic, or mechanical.
• Fluid inspection: burnt smell or metal debris indicates internal wear no code will ever show.
• Road test: slipping, flaring, or harsh shifts under real load — the behavior that defines the problem.  Also allows observation of the data stream between electrical components during regular operation.
• Physical inspection: leaks, mounts, linkage, axles — external causes that mimic internal failure.

A common real-world example

Code P0700-series faults often accompany a shift solenoid issue. One shop reads the code and quotes a rebuild ‘to be safe.’ A proper diagnostic road-tests the car, checks fluid (clean, no debris), and confirms the fault isolates to a solenoid pack — a repair measured in hundreds, not thousands. Same car, same code, very different outcomes. The difference was the diagnostic.

Should I pull codes myself before coming in?

Sure — free scans at parts stores are a fine starting clue, and telling us the codes helps. Just don’t let anyone, including us, quote major work from codes alone.  Some codes indicate very serious problems, but physical diagnosis is still required.

Why do dealerships charge so much for diagnostics?

Dealer diagnostic time is billed at dealer labor rates. The process isn’t fundamentally different — ours is simply free, because we’d rather you know the truth than pay to hear it.
