Guide to Transmission Fliter Replacement

Introduction to Transmission Filters

The smooth operation of your vehicle requires the interaction of a number of different components.  The engine provides power and the transmission directs that power to the appropriate axles.  Most vehicles today have automatic transmissions, and these transmissions use transmission fluid to hydraulically shift between various gears.  Additionally, this transmission fluid is used to lubricate and cool the various components inside of the transmission.  Over time, heat and wear will cause components inside of the transmission to degrade and break down, which will contaminate the transmission fluid.

Role of the Transmission Filter

Your automatic transmission has a filter in order to remove these particles and contaminants from the transmission fluid.  The filter will trap dirt, metallic shavings, and debris and prevent this material from circulating within the transmission.  The filter is therefore important for:

  • Protecting internal transmission components – By keeping the transmission fluid clean, the filter helps prevent damage to the valve body, pump, and clutch packs inside of the transmission.
  • Ensuring optimal vehicle performance – Clean transmission fluid will result in smoother shifting between gears and more efficient operation.
  • Extending vehicle longevity – Regular filter maintenance can significantly prolong the life of your vehicle’s transmission and help prevent costly repairs in the future.

Common Problems

Over time, a transmission filter can become too clogged with contamination to allow fluid to flow within the transmission.  It is also possible for the filter to break or become dislodged within the transmission, which can also interfere with the proper function of the transmission.  Some common signs of a transmission filter problem include:

  • Delayed shifting or slipping – Since the transmission is a hydraulic system, any interruption of the fluid’s flow can cause problems with shifting.
  • Noises from the transmission – When the filter is not working properly, you might hear whining or buzzing sounds coming from the transmission.
  • Transmission overheating – Since the fluid also cools the transmission, a clogged filter can result in the transmission becoming too hot and causing internal damage.

Neglecting to deal with a clogged or broken filter can have negative consequences for your automatic transmission.  These include:

  • Increased wear and tear on the transmission
  • Potential internal damage caused by overheating or lack of lubrication
  • Increased repair costs due to catastrophic failure of major transmission components

Repair Processes

Depending on the transmission type, replacing the filter may be very simple or may be very complicated.  In general, the steps for replacement would be:

  • Making sure that you purchase the correct filter, gasket and transmission fluid for your vehicle.
  • It is best to get the vehicle up off the ground so that you can be underneath the transmission for repairs.
  • Drain the old fluid and remove the transmission pan. This will allow you to access the transmission filter on most vehicles.
  • Install the new filter, replace the transmission pan using a new gasket, and refill the transmission with new transmission fluid.
  • Safely dispose of the old fluid and filter. Remember that this old fluid can be recycled if it is handled correctly and not contaminated with other materials.
  • After test driving, get the vehicle back up off the ground so that you can inspect for any leaks coming from the transmission pan, etc.

However, some transmission types do not have a simple replaceable filter.  For instance, there are some Dodge and Jeep vehicles where the transmission filter is actually part of the transmission pan and requires replacement of the entire assembly.  Other transmission types may have a screen filter that is not designed to be changed as part of regular fluid maintenance.  It is important to make sure that you have the proper tools, parts and fluid if you attempt to replace the filter yourself.

FAQ’s

  • How often should the transmission filter be replaced? Your vehicle’s owner’s manual will have the manufacturer’s recommendations for regular transmission fluid service.  Things like towing, mountain driving, etc. will increase the stress on your transmission and require more frequent servicing.
  • What are the benefits of regular filter replacement? Maintaining clean transmission fluid and a clean filter will result in less contamination circulating in the transmission, which will help extend the life of your transmission and improve your vehicle’s reliability.
  • Can I replace the transmission filter by myself? While it is possible for those with proper tools and mechanical ability to replace a filter, having the proper facilities to lift the vehicle and the complexity involved in replacement, it is often best to leave things to a transmission repair specialist to properly replace your transmission filter.
