When Youโ€™re Buying a Used Car in the Denver Region: Why You Should Check the Transmission First

Buying a used vehicle in the Denver metro area – whether in Lakewood, Westminster, Boulder or the Front Range – can be an excellent value. But hereโ€™s a critical caveat: many buyers focus on engine condition, mileage, exterior appearance, and overlook one of the costliest potential risks: the transmission. At Advanced Transmission Center, we frequently see used cars come into our Lakewood & Westminster locations with overlooked transmission trouble. Hereโ€™s why you should make transmission inspection your first checklist item.

Why the Transmission Matters More than You Think

Your transmission is essentially the brain and muscle of the drivetrain: it transfers engine power to the wheels in a smooth, controlled way. When it goes wrong, repair or replacement costs often run into the thousands. By checking the transmission before purchase, you avoid purchasing a vehicle with a ticking time bomb under the hood.

In the Denver/Front Range region, there are extra stressors: elevation changes, frequent towing or mountain trips, stop-and-go traffic, and hilly terrain. These put additional load on transmissions which may have already been through heavy use.

Common Red Flags to Catch on a Used Car

Hereโ€™s a list of what to look for:

  1. Service/repair history related to transmission
Ask the seller: Has the transmission been serviced? Has fluid been changed? Has there been any major repair or rebuild? Also run the VIN through a vehicle history report to check for past transmission codes or rebuilds.
  2. Test drive: check for shifting behavior
During a test drive you want to pay attention to:
  • Delayed engagement (vehicle takes moment to start moving when in Drive or Reverse)
  • Harsh or jerky shifts (especially during acceleration or deceleration)
  • Unusual noises when shifting gears (grinding, whining, humming)
  • Signs of โ€œgear huntingโ€ or erratic shifting up/down under load

If you detect any of these, the transmission may be hiding a serious issue.

  1. Fluid condition & leaks
Check beneath the car for any red/ reddish-brown fluid puddles (which often indicate transmission fluid) or dark stains. Also check the transmission fluid itself if accessible: dark/burnt smelling fluid or metallic debris is a serious red flag.ย  Keep in mind though that the fluid might have been changed very recently and be bright red while the transmission might still have issues!
  2. Load history: how was the vehicle used?
In this region, vehicles that have done heavy towing (trailers, boats, mountains), frequent mountain driving or substantial stop-and-go commuting will certainly have more wear on the transmission. Ask about previous use: Was the car regularly used to tow? Did it go to high altitude roads? Was it driven in heavy traffic?
  3. Age, mileage, and major service history
While high mileage isnโ€™t automatically a deal-breaker, a high-mileage used car with no obvious transmission service history increases risk. If a car has, say, 100-150k miles and no record of major fluid/service or if the transmission has never been inspected, assume risk.

Why You Should Bring It to a Transmission Specialist Before You Buy

Having a general mechanic check a used car is good – but having a transmission specialist inspect it gives you an added layer of safety. At our Lakewood & Westminster centers we offer pre-purchase transmission/driveline inspections.

We can:

  • Perform a transmission fluid condition check
  • Connect diagnostics to scan for transmission fault codes
  • Do a short test drive to evaluate shift behavior under load
  • Assess external signs of wear (leaks, mounts, cooling)
This kind of specialist screening often identifies issues that a standard โ€œused car inspectionโ€ might miss.

What It Could Cost You If You Donโ€™t Check

Buying a โ€œgood-looking used carโ€ with a hidden transmission issue can quickly turn into a big expense. A rebuild or replacement of a transmission in the Denver metro area can cost thousands of dollars, not to mention downtime, towing and inconvenience. Itโ€™s far cheaper to spend a little time for a free specialist inspection before purchase than tens of thousands after.

Final Checklist Before You Sign

Hereโ€™s a short actionable checklist you can bring to the used-car lot or seller:

  • Ask for VIN and check vehicle history (for transmission or rebuild entries)
  • Ask: Whatโ€™s the fluid service history of the transmission?
  • Watch/feel for: delay in engagement, rough shifts, odd noises, slipping
  • Look under the car: red fluid puddles, dark spots, fresh stains
  • Check usage: heavy towing? mountainous driving? stop-and-go city traffic?
  • Consider a specialist transmission inspection before purchase
